Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Float Trip
Float quietly down the Chilkat River through the world's largest congregation of bald eagles on a guided raft trip. From October through February, up to 3,500 eagles gather here to feed on late-run salmon, but summer visitors still see dozens of resident eagles, plus bears, moose, and seals along the riverbanks. The guide paddles and steers while narrating the ecology, so this is a relaxed float rather than whitewater. Binoculars and rain gear are provided. For cruise passengers, the logistics are simple. The tour operator picks you up near the cruise ship pier, and the total time including transfer is about four hours. Walking is minimal since you are in the raft the entire time. Temperatures along the river can be cool even in summer, so dress in layers. This excursion works well for all ages and mobility levels, and the eagle sightings make it one of the most consistently rewarding wildlife experiences in Alaska.
